After the pattern of Dantes Inferno, Lord Holden descends to Purgatory with a 16th Century Catholic saint as his guide. They set out from Brompton Oratory in London, before crossing the mythical river Styx.
With a deliciously witty style, Holden recounts his interviews with 48 prominent Victorians who have been consigned to the Seven Circles of Purgatory. Florence Nightingale is being punished for Hypocrisy; General Gordon (of Sudan) is in the Second Circle among the War Lovers; Count DOrsay, Cardinal Manning and Lord Brougham have all committed one or more of the Seven Deadly Sins.
Angus William Eden Holden, 3rd Baron Holden (1898 1951) was a British politician and writer. He stood as the Liberal candidate for Tottenham North at the 1929 general election and served in the Labour administration of Clement Attlee in 1950. He wrote several books on country houses, travel and royalty.
